We are pleased to announce the results of the 3rd National English Writing Competition (NEW-C), where more than 40 primary schools in Singapore nominated over a hundred of their best students to represent them.
We were pleasantly surprised at the diversity of themes the young writers chose to explore this year. Some were familiar, drawing from the common experiences of daily life such as sibling rivalry, pranks between classmates and bullying at school. Others pushed the boundaries of imagination towards the collapse of Changi airport, being lost in the Amazon and the horrors of World War 3.
Some brought tears to eyes, while others attracted non-stop chuckles. Be they touching or entertaining, they all represented the writer’s best effort, and in several cases, courage for pushing the limits of the proverbial box, epitomised by this year’s Category 2 winner Ryan Chia with his unusual story involving a flock of mysterious black birds. In demonstrating brilliant storytelling and entertaining through imaginative plots, we are heartened that he is in such good company that we found it fair to award a record 9 merit prizes for Category 2.
Here, let us celebrate our boys and girls who stood out for their creativity and courage as well as skill and finesse in crafting engaging and entertaining stories:
