National English Writing Competition (Singapore) 2022

We are pleased to announce the results of the 5th National English Writing Competition (NEW-C), where 39 primary schools in Singapore nominated over a hundred of their best students to represent them.
After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, we are glad to see that our students have kept up their standards of writing. In particular, we are heartened by the quality of this year’s Category 2 participants. The top three entries chose 3 very different topics, themes and styles, showcasing the diversity among our young writers. Among them, we have an imaginative tale of a banyan tree tackling the very mature topic of one’s roots, an orphan struggling between his fractured past and future fears, and childhood friendship broken, repaired and strengthened through a wall.
In Category 1, although more than half of the participants chose “Lost” as their topic, resulting in intense competition, several stories stood out for their technical excellence, or creative interpretation. Over the course of judging, we found each story, winner or not, a worthy work in its own right, and a beacon of hope for the future of Singapore’s literature.
Here, let us celebrate our boys and girls who stood out for their creativity, skill and finesse in crafting engaging and entertaining stories:
