National English Writing Competition (Singapore) 2017

We are pleased to announce the results of the 2nd National English Writing Competition (NEW-C), where more than 40 primary schools in Singapore nominated over a hundred of their best students to represent them.
While we are heartened to note a significant increase in the number of participants, we are even more thrilled by the high quality of the entries. In fact, there were so many excellent stories deserving of recognition that we felt it necessary to increase the number of prizes awarded.
In particular, the two stories which won the 1st prize in both categories deserve special mention. We believe it is not an exaggeration to say that few adult writers are capable of producing these masterpieces in an hour – or two. If these students had not written them on-the-spot, we would find it hard to believe that they were written by primary school students in under an hour.
The excellence of these stories does not in any way diminish the achievements of the other award winners. Each of them is worthy in its own right, either by virtue of technical excellence, or outstanding concepts. There are those which shone through brilliant storytelling, entertained through imaginative plots, and provoked thought through subtle messages. And each of them is a beacon of hope for the future of Singapore’s literature.
Together, we present to you these gems and place them on the national stage to celebrate their brilliance, effort and achievement:
