We are pleased to announce the results of the inaugural National English Writing Competition (NEW-C), where more than 30 primary schools in Singapore nominated over a hundred of their best students to represent them.
Over the course of judging, we were thrilled by their imaginative science fiction, tickled by their humourous laments and touched by their heartwarming tales. From colourful language such as “I sat at the taxi stand till everything below my belly button went numb” to social commentary such as “I knew that my mathematics teacher could mark papers faster than most people could brush their teeth, but I was no homework machine”, this competition has proven that not every story has to be built from basic stock phrases or clichéd plots.
As the torch for Singapore literature continues to burn bright and alive through these boys and girls, let us celebrate their effort and achievement:
